Vaser – What is it?

At Rejuvence Clinic we offer cutting edge liposculpting procedures that help you to attain the body and shape you have always wanted. By combining VASER liposuction and J-Plazty techniques we are the only clinic in the UK that can achieve fat removal with phenomenal skin tightening. We believe our services are not just for a small lucky group of men and women within reach of perfection. We can bring a smile to anyone and boost their confidence without intimidating them with images of male and female perfection.

VASER is minimally invasive liposuction that does not require a general anaesthetic and instead can be done with patients awake under local anaesthetic. VASER liposuction is much more than traditional liposuction. It is often referred to as liposculpture and can help to remove excess fat in stubborn hard to remove areas providing a more contoured and appealing silhouette. Advantages of VASER liposuction over other liposuction techniques are:

No overnight stay is required.
Minimally invasive with very little damage to surrounding tissues.
Minimal risk of bleeding, bruising and discomfort
Minimal downtime associated with procedure.
Some stimulation of collagen and limited skin tightening.

Conventional liposuction can result in damage to adjacent structures, increasing bruising, increased bleeding and has no skin tightening effect.

How does VASER work?

VASER stands for Vibration of Sound Energy at Resonance. Essentially the VASER probes emit ultrasound energy that specifically targets fat cells leaving other tissues intact. The fat is subsequently emulsified (melted) by the ultrasound energy and can then be suctioned away using gentle suction probes. There is minimal damage to the surrounding muscle and fascia.

How is VASER performed?

VASER is a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anaesthetic. Following administration of local anaesthetic and appropriate numbing of the region of interest a probe is inserted under the skin into the fat and this transmits ultrasound energy that subsequently liquefies fat leaving surrounding adjacent structures in tact. A suction probe is then inserted and through a gentle suction process removes the fat.

This is very different to traditional liposuction techniques that employ the use of liposuction cannulas fitted with specialised cutting blades. They are often associated with increased bleeding and bruising as well as longer downtime and most importantly can result in inadvertent damage to other surrounding structures.

In more extensive liposculpting cases, where there are multiple regions involved including the front and the back and/or large amounts of fat to be removed we suggest carrying out the procedure under sedation. We also suggest carrying out procedures under sedation in revision liposuction cases. This is not quite a general anaesthetic but does require monitoring and the presence of an anaesthetist. Where sedation is necessary we carry out the procedures at a sister clinic on Harley Street. There is also a significant additional cost involved.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Massage is a type of massage that is performed to encourage improved drainage of fluid following procedures such as VASER liposuction. Massage combined with deep breathing exercises helps to divert fluid away from recovering and overworked lymphatic drainage regions to other regions of the body helping to eliminate swelling and speed up post-operative recovery. Following VASER and J-Plazty procedure MLD is encouraged.

VASER liposuction is minimally invasive and much less aggressive than traditional powered liposuction. As a result it is carried out as a day case under local anaesthetic. There is some discomfort associated with administration of the local anaesthetic but once this has taken effect no further pain should be experienced. For the following few days there will be some pain and discomfort that is easily treated with over the counter painkillers.

VASER liposuction is not a fat loss solution in itself. Lifestyle changes are needed for the effects of VASER to be effective and long lasting. These lifestyle changes include sticking to a healthy diet and doing regular exercise. Fat cells that are removed by VASER are not replaced by the body. Indeed the body does not tend to reproduce fat cells after puberty. As a result any slight weight gain is unlikely to accumulate around the regions that have received VASER treatment but will most likely be evenly distributed elsewhere in the body.

There are a variety of different VASER techniques available. Terms that are often brandished include VASER Hi-Def, Vaser Mid-Def, Vaser 4D and VASER 360. These are all essentially the same but consist of differences in the amount of fat taken off in different regions of the body. VASER Hi-Def, VASER Mid-Def and VASER 4D are advanced body sculpting techniques that aim to create a more muscular, liposculpted appearance with particular focus on the chest, abdomen and flanks. VASER 360 is a circumferential liposuction technique that is particularly applicable to the thighs to give more shapely, muscular look and help remove fat and cellulite.

VASER liposuction will result in an improved body shape with more appealing contours. However, VASER liposuction is not a complete weight loss solution and works best with lifestyle changes that include a healthy diet and regular exercise. VASER liposuction is particularly good at helping to remove stubborn areas of fat that, despite active exercise and dieting, cannot be improved. More specialised forms of VASER Hi-Def and VASER Mid-Def are often mentioned and relate to the use of VASER to sculpt a more athletic and muscular physique. VASER liposuction is not for everyone though and there are situations in which a traditional abdominoplasty maybe more appropriate.

There is reduced downtime associated with VASER liposuction compared with traditional liposuction techniques. It is recommended that 2 to 5 days are taken off work. Light exercise should not be commenced for 2 weeks after the procedure. Heavy and more strenuous exercise can be restarted around 4 weeks after the procedure.

The aftercare process for VASER liposuction is more involving than traditional liposuction. The results of VASER are somewhat dictated by how closely the aftercare is followed and maintained. The incision sites on the areas where liposuction has been performed are often left open and may leak some small amounts of fluid that can be blood tinged. This is nothing to worry about but should there be excessive leakage we are always on hand to help. After the procedure you will provided with a tailor made pressure garment to be worn for 72 hours after the procedure. Thereafter it is adviseable to wear this garment for 12 hours a day for the next few weeks. Some bruising and swelling should be expected and certain regions can be worse than others. Again this is nothing to worry about and will resolve in time. For the first 24 hours after the procedure some slight discomfort should be expected and can be easily addressed with over the counter painkillers. Driving is best avoided for 7 to 10 days after the procedure. After VASER liposuction at least 1 week should be taken off work. Physical exercise and strenuous activities should be avoided for a further 2 to 3 weeks. The final results of VASER liposuction can take upto 3 to 4 months.

It is claimed by many that one of the advantages of VASER over other liposuction methods is that it is able to provide some skin tightening. However, the extent of skin tightening achieved is very limited. Indeed in certain regions such as the abdomen, neck and arms, VASER will successfully remove fat but will leave skin potentially more loose.
Other clinics suggest alternative methods post operatively to aid in skin tightening. This includes engaging in moderate amounts of cardiovascular exercise following the recovery period. Other suggestions include good hydration, regular massage and avoidance of over the counter remedies and potions. Radio frequency treatments can provide some skin tightening.
At Rejuvence Clinic incorporation of J-Plazty with your VASER treatment can achieve phenomenal skin tightening far superior to any other treatments available on the market. This is also a minimally invasive technique and is best done at the same time as your VASER procedure. Results of J Plazty for skin tigethening are comparable to a tummy tuck or brachioplasty (for ‘bingo wings’) in cases of mild to moderate skin laxity.

Non-invasive radio frequency and ultrasound treatments such as 3D Lipomed, Ultherapy and Coolsculpting have been touted as being able to remove significant amounts of fat and result in moderate skin tightening without the need for any surgical intervention. Although some have found these treatments beneficial they have a number of drawbacks. The amount of fat reduction and skin tightening is very variable, multiple sessions are needed, can be painful and in certain cases are associated with superficial burns to the skin. VASER liposuction and J-Plazty results are more consistent and final results much better.

VASER liposuction is not a weight loss tool but should be considered a liposculpting tool. Ultimately effective weight loss will only come about through regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet. VASER liposuction will add the finishing touch to your weight loss efforts and help to remove those areas you are struggling with as well improve your overall shape.

As with any procedure, despite being minimally invasive, there are dangers and risks. At Rejuvence Clinic we strive to minimise these risks as much as possible. As well as being trained in VASER we offer an extra level of safety by performing all VASER procedures under ultrasound guidance and hence we are able to visualise in real time whether our VASER probes are in the correct place and exactly how much and where fat is being removed from. It also allows us to ensure we do not inadvertently damage structures such as veins that can result in increased bruising afterwards.
