Where is your keloid?
Ear
The vast majority of keloids that form on the ear are the result of ear piercings. Often keloids can form where a piercing has not been carried out properly and results in infection.
Keloids on the ear do have a high rate of recurrence, and hence prevention is always better than cure.
At Rejuvence, we specialise in the treatment and surgical removal of keloid scars on the ear.
Head
Shaving bumps on the back of the scalp, especially following a skin fade, are now quite common – in worst case scenarios they can progress to keloids.
Acne Keloidalis Nuchae can be categorised into 4 grades of disease: (1) Papules; (2) Nodules; (3) Merged Papules & Nodules; (4) Keloid Tumour and Plaque. Treatment options depend on the grade of the condition and the presence of any superimposed infection.
Face & Neck
There are a large number of causes of keloids on the face and neck – which is a result of medical conditions or after surgery.
Acne – These typically occur along the jaw line and on the cheeks in both men and women.
Ingrown Hairs – When acne occurs in hair bearing regions of the face, the formation of acne Keloid scars can cause trapping of hairs.
Shaving Bumps – Aggressive shaving, especially for those with very curly hair within the beard can also result in ingrown hairs. Repeated scratching can cause breaks in the skin and can subsequently cause a keloid.
Surgery – Facial surgery resulting in long scars can eventually become keloid in nature.
Piercings – As is the case with keloids on the ear, piercings, especially just in front of the ears (the pre-auricular region), can result in the formation of a keloid.
Body
Keloids can occur anywhere on the body. However, there are certain specific areas that are associated with specific causes.
Acne on the chest, back and shoulders is extremely common amongst all ethnicities.
Scabbed chicken pox lesions can leave quite marked scars. In keloid prone individuals, especially those from Asian and Afro-Caribbean backgrounds, chicken pox scabs can develop into keloid scars.
Ingrown hairs – Asians and Afro-Caribbean ethnicities (skin types IV-VI) are especially prone to ingrown hairs following shaving.
Piercings – Poorly administered piercings and infected jewellery can result in the development of keloid scars at the site of body piercings.
Cosmetic Surgery – Afro-Caribbean, South Asian, South American and Hispanic patients are very prone to developing keloid scars following surgery.

What treatment options are available for keloid scars?
Treatment options for keloid scars can be categorised into non-surgical and surgical.
The choice of keloid treatment is often dependent upon the anatomical location, cause, ethnic background and the success and/or failure of any previous treatments.
Non-surgical treatment options consist of intralesional steroid injections, chemotherapy (5-FU), wrinkle relaxing toxins, YAG Laser and surface or intralesional cryotherapy. Surgical treatments consist of shave excision, elliptical excision and core excisions.
Combinations of different treatments tend to work better than single stand alone approaches. In addition, an appreciation of ethnic background is essential as there are significant differences in response to treatment amongst different ethnicities.

At Rejuvence we have experience in treating clients who suffer with troublesome keloids. We are able to provide a course of steroid injections in combination with YAG laser. We are also able to carry out surgical excision of the keloids and recommend a combination of steroid injections afterwards along side compression bandaging (depending upon where the keloids are) and silicone gel and strips. We advocate the use of steroid strips in certain ethnic backgrounds for colour matching. We are also very experienced in dealing with the complications of treatment such as skin atrophy, hypopigmentation and keloid recurrence following surgery. We have had excellent results but always advise our clients that there is a high risk of recurrence. Realistic expectations are paramount and acceptance that we cannot make your keloids disappear is needed.
